After searching high and low for some homemade lye soap I finally decided to bite the bullet and just make a batch. Little did I know what fun that would become.
Why was I searching for homemade lye soap? A friend of mine was covered in poison ivy and had tried every over-the-counter ivy treatment she could find. My aunts and grandmothers kept a bar of old fashion soap around and it was frequently used to treat ivy rashes of all kinds. Gentle on the skin, but would stop the itch and burn of just about anything.
I do sell a few bars from time to time, when I have stock on hand. While I do enjoy making it, mixing up old fashion soap will make a whopping big mess in the kitchen, materials are not as easy to find or as cheap as everyone suspects, and a batch takes a minimum of six weeks to cure before use.
But I love so much, I will probably never go back to buying store bought soap.
- It's gentle on skin, even so much that people with super sensitive skin can use it
- Contains all the natural glycerine extracted from store bought soap which gives more emollients to your skin with each bath or shower
- Leaves skin feeling clean, smooth, and smelling great
- Produces a rich lather
- Unscented bars are a favorite with hunters
- Scented bars made of vegetable oils are a favorite with the vegans
- So gentle it's even great for babies
- Will help clear up cuts and scrapes and even poison ivy, oak, and sumac
- Unscented bars are fantastic for a base for homemade laundry detergents for people with extra sensitive skin
Right now I do have bars in stock, but only as long as supplies last. If you are interested in a special order of 10 or more bars (of the same scent or unscented), read father down for details.
Unscented bars are made of plain old lard and lye.
Each bar weighs approximately 5 oz. each (give or take a little since they are each hand cut) which is a chunk of soap. The bars are hard and will last several weeks if not allowed to lay in standing water between uses.
While it's easy on your skin, old fashion unscented soap is also a great additive to laundry. It can be used as a stain stick or shaved into a wash load of laundry for added stain fighting power and is known to make whites whiter and towels fluffier than ever. I use the unscented bars to make my homemade laundry detergents.
Each bar of unscented soap is $6.00 each.

I also make scented bars available as well. They are also made with lye but instead of lard I use blends of one or more of the following: olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, palm oil, and grapeseed oil. These are considered "Castile Soaps" the likes of which are found in fine boutiques and gift shops around the world.
They are scented with
essential oils and body safe oils of only the finest quality.
Each (full size) bar weighs 5-6 oz. ounces and like the lard and lye bars, will last weeks if cared for properly. They may dry out to a lighter weight but as soon as they become introduced to moisture, plump back up to size.

Handcrafted crocheted wash cloths

While looking through soap accessories on day I came across crocheted and knitted wash cloths. They were pretty cool looking and since I crochet, I decided to try them out.
Turns out they're the bomb!
Made from 100% American grown cotton, these dandy cloths are soft, tight woven, and durable so they will hold up for many years with normal bathing use.
They are absolutely adorable as well and I make them in a variety of colors.
Approximately 7" x 9" these cloths are over sized compared to other handmade cloths found in boutiques and online.
Constructed using single and double crochet stitches to give them a bumpy texture great for scrubbing you clean.
Wash clothes are $6.50 each.

I started noticing a build of of tiny scraps of soap once my bars had worn down.
I thought it would be a shame just to throw them away or use scented Castile bars as laundry additive.
I didn't want to waste a bit of my luxurious soaps and I was sure my customers didn't want to either.
So I came up with the soap saver pouch.
They are made with the same pattern as the handmade washcloths, and the same alternate stitching. But they are made into a pouch.
These pouches are large enough to fit a full size bar of soap, therefore covering you whole palm.
To save my left over soap pieces, I simply drop them into the pouch and pull the drawstring closed.
I use the pouch just as I would a bath sponge getting tons of great lather from the blend of soaps inside.
When finished, I rinse the bag, lightly wring out the excess water, and hang it in the shower to dry between uses.
There is no problem with the soap running out or the pouch souring as the 100% cotton fibers dry quickly in any well ventilated room.
