Team sorting anyone?

As soon as I finished my day job, I motored out to Rolling Hills Farm to check out the team sorting event.

For those who don't know, team sorting is when two people on horseback sort individual cattle into a corral. One rider guards the entrance to the corral, preventing all the cattle from rushing the entrance at once, while the other chooses and rounds up one cow/bull at a time, guiding them into the sorted group individually.

Once the first rider has sorted and corraled their chosen beast, riders switch positions and rider number two goes into action doing the same, while rider number one takes their turn at guarding the corral gate.

The whole process takes a skilled rider and a good horse- and team sorting at Rolling Hills Farm is practice for just that.

For me, it's practice at shooting rapidly moving subjects, in poor and constantly changing light, and sometimes in creative ways. This evening, it was also about how to keep my lens clean enough to shoot in the constant flow of very fine dust.

Both adults and teens had a great time learning and practicing this forgotten skill. Evelyn and her horse did a fantastic job and made it look so easy. They stirred up a little dust!

Garrett took a little slower pace. Not so much dust.

No dust at all from this handsome little cowboy but something tells me we aren't long off from seeing him cause a fuss of his own. His momma is a skilled rider so there is no doubt he's already well on his way.

I'm working all weekend so it'll be a minute before I can get through all the images I took at the event.

In the meantime, check out Sharon Shannon's awesome drone video. It puts a whole new perspective on things! Fantastic job Sharon!!
